Roke helps Romsey Young Carers Scale the Heights

Monday, 16 March 2009 00:00

Roke Manor Research employees have thrown their enthusiasm behind raising funds for a very good cause – The Romsey Young Carers Project. During the last year they have baked cakes, ran marathons, walked the Test Way, ran lending libraries, donated toys, held circus workshops and parties and even played Bingo to generate over £12,000.

This week sees the last cheque presented to Mary Ward, Coordinator of the children’s charity, representing the proceeds from the Testway walk bringing the total raised for the RYCP at £12,217.

The last cheque £853 was raised by Ellie Hobby, Maria Bright, Dave Evenden, Ann Coote, Sarah Kelly and Heidi Jones who walked the Testway, organised by the Rotary Club of Romsey.

Mary Ward, Coordinator of the Romsey Young Carers Project expressed her pleasure and surprise at receiving the final balance for RYCP. “Such an amount of money goes a long, long way in our charity. Most of our work and support for families is done by an excellent band of volunteers . We will be able to provide another day of exciting outdoor activities as was funded by Roke during 2009 for our teenage young carers. This was a great confidence booster and a real achievement for those young carers taking part and thanks to Roke we will be able to do this again during 2009. Also we will be booking some children’s theatre and puppet trips with the money raised for our youngest carers are aged 5 to 10 years old. One of whom told me at 6 years old how she washes her mum’s hair and is looking forward to when she is old enough to safely use a kettle so she can make her cups of tea. I think that says it all why we want to give them some fun.”

Every year the Caring Hands team at Roke ask all staff for nominations for the Roke charity of the year. This year Roke are busy raising funds to support the Romsey Opportunity Group.
