Roke's "Generation21" programme sets out to inspire the next generation of engineers and scientists through direct contact with experts developing exciting new technology. Activities during 2009 have included:

  • Teaching Year 5 students about electric magnetic spectrum via an interactive workshop at the Primary Science Fair, Marwell. April 2009 (attendance 500).
  • Mentoring science and technology students as part of the Engineering Education Scheme 2009 project at Barton Peverill 6th Form College (a 6 month challenge to design and build an autonomous vehicle).
  • Presenting a participative lecture on how to measure speed, and its use in Roke’s innovative products, as part of the award winning Southampton University Speed Show (Science and Engineering Week – audience 470) March 2009. Southampton University's Science and Engineering Day event overall won the British Science Association's award for the Best Engineering Event 2009.
  • Working with Quilley School of Engineering to help them obtain Siemens Partner School status, one of only 5 in the UK. Roke now has a structured relationship with Quilley, working together to enrich education in science and engineering through mentoring of staff teaching physics, and devising and presenting applied science lessons on speed of light, speed of sound and Global Satellite Positioning, with real life examples of how these are used for innovative Roke products.
  • Careers talks at Southampton and Bristol Universities, career fair at Thornden Secondary School.
  • Supporting a hands-on interactive amateur radio station at Intech science centre.
  • Hosting an open day at Roke for Southampton University IEEE Society

All engineers taking part in Generation21 do this partly in their own time whilst fully supported by Roke. They are encouraged to sign up to the Science and Engineering Ambassador Programme and undertake regular training in best practice with working with children in schools, such as offered at Cambridge University and by the Institute of Physics.

The award ceremony was held at the Harbour Lights, Ocean Village, Southampton on Tuesday 14 July.
