Join us as an undergraduate student on summer vacation and get paid an excellent monthly salary. During your time with us - typically eight weeks - you'll join a project team which will give you an opportunity to learn, and to develop new skills within the varied and interesting engineering work which takes place here.

In order to make it to interview, you will:

Have achieved well above average performance in A Level examinations, and demonstrate the ability to achieve a 2:1 or equivalent in your degree course.
Ideally be in your 2nd or 3rd year , studying a full-time degree course in Electronic Engineering, Systems Engineering, Physics, Computer Science or Mathematics (or a related discipline). However, if you are at the close of your 1st year of study or studying part-time you are still welcome to apply.
Already have some practical experience of electronics or software, so that during your placement useful work can be conducted in the laboratory under the supervision of an engineer.

Responsibilities

The goals of the internship are to extend Roke's Big Data analysis and visualisation capabilities in the following way:

To design, develop and document a data analytics framework that can be re-used by Roke in order to effectively realise different Big Data analytics requirements. The framework will probably be based on and existing Hadoop MapReduce functionality that has been developed in Roke and will provide easy integration with other Big Data technologies (such as visualisation tools).
To develop a prototype application based on the re-usable framework.
To deploy, configure and administer the prototype application on the commercial EC2 cloud computing network and to document this process and provide automation wherever possible.
To document the most effective use of the EC2 cloud (e.g. the best service level agreement) for different customer solutions.
To produce an internal service that allows the subsequent agile start-up of Big Data analytics projects at Roke utilising the commercial EC2 offering and the delivered re-usable framework and which supports multiple EC2 based projects running concurrently.

You will be working in a very dynamic environment with system designers, developers and consultants who are operating at the cutting edge of technology. To get the most out of this role you will have good communication skills and an open mind to benefit from a mutually supportive environment.

Required Knowledge & Experience

The successful candidate should have:

Undergraduate studying Computer Science or equivalent Degree
Projects and module experience in some of the areas of software development, analytics, maths, information processing, networks, cloud computing

Due to the nature of this position, candidates must be willing to undergo, and eligible to achieve HMG security clearance (prior to appointment). As a result, candidates should ideally be a British Citizen however you can hold another nationality and have resided in the UK for the last 5 years.

Sensor Systems (03IP)

Summary

Location: Romsey Hampshire

Responsibilities

Identifying applications for sensor data fusion and acquiring data sets with which to test algorithms using a range of sensors that may include cameras and other electro-optic sensors, microphones, accelerometers, RF imaging sensors, radar.
Process data using open source software tools and libraries adapting, adding to and tailoring the software where necessary under the guidance of existing Roke experts.
Examine alternative algorithms and assess applicability to application areas of interest to Roke customers.

Required Knowledge & Experience

The successful candidate should:

Be an undergraduate taking a Mathematics, Computer Science or Electronics Degree
Have projects and modules on their course covering statistics and software development
Preferably have some experience of C++ and signal processing (not essential)
Preferable artificial intelligence course (Bayesian Inference) but not essential
