Proof of Concept Studies - evaluation of operational effectiveness of technology.

Providing Advice-based Research to the Ministry of Defence

Challenge	The MoD was looking for advice on how networked communications systems could enhance the performance of their front-line troops.
Approach	With Roke acting as prime, research director and technology specialists, we constructed and led a consortium of 13 companies. This included academia, human factors and logistics specialists, large system integrators, operational analysts and military experts to address all aspects of the research.
Benefits	Roke was able to analyse and solve complex issues using the different strengths of the consortium members. The advice derived from the research has now been used by MoD to steer the communications needs of the major equipment programmes such as Bowman and Future Integrated Soldier Technology (FIST). The MoD has also been able to capitalise on the combined abilities of the consortium to address other difficult challenges in related areas of work.

Technologies to Assist 'Brown Out' Helicopter Landings
Customer	Ministry of Defence (MoD)
Challenge	Evaluate potential technologies that would enable helicopter pilots to land safely in zero visibility 'brown out' conditions.
Approach	With expertise in radar and image processing we were able to rapidly narrow down the range of available technologies applicable to this problem. Controlled trials were conducted to assess the performance of our Miniature Radar Altimeter under representative landing conditions and a demonstration vision based system rapidly prototyped to evaluate its performance. These activities have clearly demonstrated potential solutions to this problem.
Benefits	By clearly demonstrating the potential for applying Miniature Radar Altimeter and/or vision processing techniques the way is now clear to take these technologies forward into producing prototypes for field trials.

The Future of Tactical Situational Awareness

An integrated mission picture, incorporating information sourced from the land and air domains, has long been an aspiration in the land tactical space, championed under the banner of Network Enabled Capability. This feature discusses the benefits of this approach and how technological capability is being developed to make this aspiration a reality.

Quickly Creating Military Advantage

Working for the UK MOD's Defence Technology and Innovation Centre (DTIC), under a major research programme called Network Enabled Capability (NEC) for Close Combat, awarded in 2006, Roke assembled a strong consortium of partners to study how networking can enhance its military capability including peacekeeping.
