Roke donates kit that energises science lessons
As part of its strategy to excite young people about the possibilities of science and engineering, Romsey-based engineering company Roke has donated money for new wind turbine kits to the Quilley School of engineering in Eastleigh.
The school will use the equipment to enhance its teaching of science lessons.
After a successful workshop in June which featured Roke's state-of-the-art product, HALO, Roke recognised that hi-tech and interesting equipment was the key to getting students excited about science and engineering. The new kits will enable teachers at Quilley to focus on specific topics and allow more room for practical demonstration.
The new kit was purchased by the school in time for the new school year and has proved to be very popular. Head of science Tracy Philipsz commented that,
"the wind turbine kits are essential for the national curriculum, as energy topics form part of the science G.C.S.E coursework. Last year they weren’t available which limited coursework options. With Roke's help, however, Quilley have been able to purchase the desired kit."
The wind turbines are a hit with the students and have boosted the profile of science lessons. 14-year-old Quilley student Tony House said that he enjoys science lessons "because they are fun and interesting with lots of experiments."
His other class mates also commented that they preferred science over other subjects, because science was more "hands on." The fact that some of the students are already thinking about careers in science shows that Roke’s corporate citizenship strategy scheme – called Generation21 – is achieving its key objectives.
