Roke Manor Research Appoints New Chairman

Siemens' research and development company in the UK, Roke Manor Research, announced today the appointment of Dr John Taylor OBE FRS as its new Chairman with effect from 1st January 2004.

Dr Taylor, 60, is Director General of Research Councils in the UK Office of Science and Technology and Chairman of Research Councils UK. He is responsible for the UK government science budget of £3 billion per year and the seven UK research councils which fund research across the whole spectrum of science and technology in UK universities and research institutes. He also advises the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry and Cabinet minister for Science directly on all aspects of the science budget.

Dr Taylor was formerly director of Hewlett Packard Laboratories in Bristol where he developed major programmes of research in areas including internet security and wireless communications. Between 1998 and 1999 he was President of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, and chaired the UK Technology Foresight Panel in IT Electronics and Communications until 1998. He is also an honorary fellow of Emmanuel College, Cambridge and a visiting professor at Oxford University.
