Engineering enthusiasm for science at Quilley School

Roke Manor Research's senior project manager, Paul Wilton, recently ran a special lesson at the Quilley School in Eastleigh, designed to excite pupils about the practical possibilities of science and engineering.

The main aim of the lesson was to show how an understanding of basic science directly contributes to the success of a key engineering project like HALO® – Roke's world-leading acoustic locator of artillery fire on the battlefield.

As part of the lesson, the class of 20 Year Eight pupils carried out some practical demonstrations; they measured the speed of sound, considered the advantages and disadvantages of different technologies, tested the accuracy of their measurements and learnt about some of the exciting careers in electronic engineering.

Tracy Philipsz, head of science at Quilley School welcomed Roke's involvement, saying:

"At a time when the teaching and learning of science is high on the agenda, we were delighted that our students had an opportunity to engage with current and 'real' science."

Owned by Siemens and based in Romsey, Hampshire, Roke is an innovative solutions provider and contract R&D specialist. It pioneers developments in electronic sensors, networks, and communications technology, providing products and services to Siemens businesses, Government departments and commercial customers.
