Roke's expertise in radio and network communications is extensive and leading edge.
Working in both the civil and military domains we are perfectly placed to support the SESAR & JMATS programmes.
For the past 50 years, Roke has worked at the cutting edge of communications technologies. Thanks to our broad knowledge base, we can help you select and implement the optimum communications solution for your needs. Our wealth of communications systems design expertise ensures you gain the benefits of the most appropriate technology for your operations.
Spectrum Management is becoming increasingly important in the air transport market. We can help you optimise your spectrum usage and hence minimise any potential costs associated with licencing spectrum in the future.
Our work in this field includes:
| Technology Selection |
Our in-depth understanding of applied research and emerging standards as well as existing solutions allows us to confidently advise customers making critical business decisions when selecting communications solutions. |
| Radio Communications |
Our leading-edge expertise has been used to deliver consultancy, prototypes, testbeds, reference designs and 'first-to-market' products for our customers for both civil and military applications. |
| Resilient / Secure Network |
From analysis & design of new systems (hardware and software) through to in-house capability to design and deploy secure networks, e.g. IPSec, SSL and goverment approved solutions. |
| Civil / Military Interoperability |
With communications & networking experience in both domains we are perfectly placed to advise on interoperability issues and solutions. |

EUROCONTROL
|
| Challenge |
One of EUROCONTROL’s highest priorities is the safety and security of passengers and crew. Following the events of 9/11, EUROCONTROL sought ways in which to make improvements to air safety. One possible safety improvement they identified was the ability to remotely observe the cockpit of an aircraft by relaying video and still images back to the ground. Wanting to keep costs down, EUROCONTROL looked to use existing technologies and began exploring the use of mobile networks. Of particular interest were the capabilities of Third Generation (3G) systems – the same technology used in mobile phones |
|
| Approach |
The UMTS TDD system would now have to work both, at high speed and at altitude. Our in-depth knowledge of the system allowed us to quickly identify and implement modifications needed to make it work in this environment. Numerous simulations and tests were then run to validate the modified system, which in turn reduced the risk of wasting valuable flight time later in the project.
|
| Benefits |
Working together, Roke and EUROCONTROL demonstrated the ability to transmit live cockpit and cabin video footage to a ground station. Although designed for security purposes, the system also demonstrated its ability to provide other means of communications. The most obvious example would be to allow passengers to use mobile phones on board. However, it could also be used for air traffic control and aircraft operator purposes by providing an alternative to air-ground VHF communications. By exploiting existing technology and using our extensive experience in this area we quickly brought a solution to our customer which met their needs and worked first time.
