UNDER THE HOOD: HOW ZODIAC DELIVERS THE DIGITAL EDGE

Project ZODIAC is not a concept, a lab project, or a future aspiration – it is delivering information advantage for the British Army today. Built with a mission partner model that blends deep operational understanding and world-class systems engineering, it connects sensors, data, and decision-makers across domains and coalitions, at speed and scale.

This article takes you inside the technical foundations that make ZODIAC so effective – the same design principles now influencing thinking across other domains and NATO partners.

Each section explores a core pillar of the capability, showing how engineering choices made at the outset are driving advantage in the field:

  • Open, Vendor-Agnostic Architecture

Ensuring rapid integration of new sensors, tools, and effectors without lock-in.

  • Data to Decision: Fusing the Kill Chain

Compressing the time from detection to effect for greater tempo, precision, and survivability.

  • Evolving in the Fight

A capability proven in today’s battlespace, designed to adapt continuously with new tools, technologies, and lessons from the field.

OPEN, VENDOR-AGNOSTIC ARCHITECTURE

The SDR 2025 commits to open, adaptable architectures that can evolve without locking into a single vendor or reliance on proprietary technology and systems that the MOD cannot influence and control. ZODIAC is a live example of this in action.

From inception, its architecture was engineered to be fully MOD-owned and vendor-agnostic:

Sovereign control – The MOD decides access, data flows, and the evolution path.

Multi-supplier ecosystem – SMEs and primes alike contribute, strengthening resilience.

Fast refresh – New technologies integrated in weeks, keeping pace with threats and opportunities.

In Warfighter 2025, this meant new analytical tools could be integrated mid exercise, during operation, while being actively used without service interruption – an outcome that would be near-impossible in a proprietary system.

This approach also hardwires coalition interoperability. By adhering to NATO and Five Eyes standards from day one, ZODIAC plugs directly into allied C2 environments, proven by seamless integration into US Corps-level networks during the exercise.

Its ability to absorb new tools at speed is no accident. The pace is made sustainable because ZODIAC’s foundation was engineered with discipline – doing the hard, sometimes unglamorous work of integration and testing that ensures new technologies don’t just work quickly, but work reliably in the fight.

DATA TO DECISION – INTEGRATING THE KILL CHAIN

In modern operations, speed of action is decisive. ZODIAC compresses the traditional kill chain into a single, connected process – enabling validated data to move from detection to effect in seconds, even in complex coalition environments.

It does this through a unified intelligence picture – multi-domain sensor data is fused into a single view accessible at every echelon and precision automation – critical data correlation and dissemination are automated, freeing human analysts to focus on high-value judgement.

In Warfighter 2025, this approach delivered faster effects than coalition norms. The system’s design means AI-assisted recognition, new sensor feeds, and advanced effectors can be incorporated at pace – keeping the Army’s targeting edge sharp.

EVOLVING IN THE FIGHT

ZODIAC is more than a capability – it is a living system, proven in today’s battlespace and designed to improve with every mission. Unlike traditional programmes that freeze at delivery, ZODIAC continues to evolve, integrating new technologies and lessons learned in real time.

In Warfighter 2025, ZODIAC absorbed new analytical tools mid-exercise without downtime – something rarely achievable in proprietary systems. In NATO contexts, it plugged seamlessly into allied command-and-control, showing that coalition interoperability is not an aspiration but an operational fact.

Each exercise adds resilience: spoofing, interference, and contested conditions sharpen its ability to deliver consistent tempo and effect.

This adaptability is deliberate. Built on open, sovereign design principles, ZODIAC can field next-generation AI recognition, novel sensors, or advanced effectors in weeks rather than years. It means the capability is never “finished” – and that is its strength.

ZODIAC delivers tangible advantage for the British Army today, while ensuring it grows sharper and more relevant with every challenge, every coalition integration, and every future fight.
